Italy skipper Fabio Cannavaro has defended Roberto Donadoni after the Azzurri exited Euro 2008 at the quarter-final stage.
Canna was injured in the world champions’ first training session in Austria and was unable to play any part in the tournament.
But the Real Madrid defender stayed in the camp and was in Vienna for last night’s penalty shootout pain.
““We are only going out on penalties, so the Coach did a good job and we all defend him,” Cannavaro said.
“Apart from the first match, which was more of a psychological issue than anything else, we clubbed together and turned this competition around.
“Unfortunately this is the way football is and penalty shoot-outs in particular.
“The team gave 100 per cent today and we proved that if we play as a unit we are difficult to beat.
“It is disappointing, but we have to go home now. The problem with our profession is that if you win, you are a genius, but if you lose then you are useless.”
Cannavaro has stressed that he will continue his international career in the hope of leading Italy in World Cup 2010.
