Grosso: Out with honour

AD 1 Lyon stopper Fabio Grosso was able to take a philosophical approach to Italy’s heartbreaking exit from Euro 2008.

The world champions lost to Spain on penalties in last night’s quarter-final clash after a dour 0-0 draw.

Grosso converted his spot-kick with aplomb, but it was in vain as Daniele De Rossi and Antonio Di Natale fluffed their lines.

“We played a good game and both teams had their chances,” Grosso reflected.

“Unfortunately with penalties sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn’t. All credit to Spain, they played well.

“Spain like to keep possession and lower the tempo, so they were difficult to face.

“We had a good European Championship and luck wasn’t on our side. We go home, but with honour.

“We started with an uphill struggle and wanted to go all the way, but that’s football,” he concluded.
