Corradini hails Italy's 'Maradona'

AD 1 7/08/2008

Italy coach Corrado Corradini hailed his side's dramatic 1-0 victory against Norway as "beautiful and important" as the Azzurrine got their UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship campaign off to the perfect start in Romorantin. Tatiana Bonetti's stunning 90th-minute strike had Corradini likening the skilful substitute to the legendary Diego Maradona, leaving Norway coach Jarl Torske to rue the chances his side missed in a strong second-half display.

Corrado Corradini, Italy coach
It is a very beautiful and important victory. We've played Norway three times recently and we've lost twice and drawn once, so I'm really satisfied. It was a very tough game and Norway probably deserved to score a goal so you could say we had some luck. [Italy's goalscorer] Tatiana Bonetti is very small but she is our most gifted player. We call her [Diego] Maradona. She is still young and she isn't ready to play from the start, but we know she can make a real difference to the team when comes on. Before she scored I was hoping the game would finish goalless – that would have been a good result. I still think Norway can qualify because they're a great team and they are physically very strong.

Jarl Torske, Norway coach
Overall we didn't deserve to lose, especially when you consider our second-half performance. We didn't play very well in the first half but we improved, put Italy under pressure and created some good chances. Unfortunately we didn't convert any of them and Italy scored a beautiful goal at the end. I think I have played Italy six times as Norway coach and until today I had never lost. I wasn't surprised by their quality, though. We saw them recently in the La Manga tournament and they were the best European team there. They have a good team but I think today we could easily have got a draw or even a win so of course we feel very disappointed.
