Fabio Grosso was among Italy’s most impressive players on a dismal night, but reiterates the team can recover from this loss.
“We take responsibility for our errors and did react in the second half, but luck was not on our side with our scoring opportunities,” he said of the 3-0 crushing at the hands of Holland.
“It isn’t our first defeat and we will certainly get back on track to give 100 per cent against Romania, as that is already going to be a decisive result.”
Grosso came off the bench in the second half and proved dangerous in the left-back position, creating a few chances.
“At this moment in time individual performances don’t matter. We are a team, who today did not prove their worth and must begin to do so from the next game,” continued the Lyon man.
“We know that it was a bad match and take responsibility for that, but we also realise there are another two games in front of us and we will try to turn it around.
“We are coming out of a very heavy defeat and must work together in these four days to take a different approach to the Romania tie.”
Italy were 2-0 down at half-time and despite some good opportunities, conceded a third on the counter-attack.
“It was a strange game that started with two very avoidable goals. The second and third were classic counters that came from our good opportunities cleared off the line.
“We have to analyse our errors and try to learn from them as we go into the next match trying to do considerably better.”
