Zambrotta defends the defence

AD 1 Gianluca Zambrotta has refused to blame the defence or post-World Cup complacency for their horror show with Holland.

“When you lose, it is all done together and not just the fault of the defence, midfield or attack,” said the new Milan signing after their 3-0 defeat.

“We’ll talk it over with the Coach, but the fact we conceded two goals on the counter-attack is worrying, as it is something that we should not allow to happen.

“Now we must come together again and prepare for the crunch match with Romania, as that is going to be decisive.”
During the game Zambrotta played both as a left-back and right-back, switching when Fabio Grosso came off the bench.

The scramble to find a reason behind their poor result is in full swing and some have accused the Azzurri of complacency after winning the 2006 World Cup.

“The World Cup is in the past and I don’t think that had any effect on the squad tonight. There are another two games to go and we can recover from this situation.

“The second half was easily better than the first, especially in terms of psychological approach.

“We came out to begin with a little sluggish compared to the Dutch, but reacted in a bid to equalise and inevitably became too unbalanced.”
